Siddi Kavand Quilt

Handmade by women of the Siddi community in northern Karnataka, India, each of these beautiful quilts are made from layers of repurposed cotton, hand-stitched into unique designs.

The quilts are made without a fixed design. Starting at the outer edge, the quilter works towards the centre in a spiral, selecting and placing colours and shapes as she works, guided by her own sense of colour and pattern. The fabric pieces are hand stitched onto a sari backing with rows of running stitch holding the layers in place.

This way of working means that every Kavand is different. The colour combinations, the arrangement of the pieces and even the character of the stitching reflect the woman who made it.

Traditionally, the fabric is gathered from family saris and clothes. The fabric carries memories of the people who wore it, bringing together fragments of everyday life and family connections into the quilt.

Beautiful as a bedcover, sofa throw or wall hanging, each quilt carries with it generations of Siddi quilting knowledge and the personalities of the woman who made it.
