This richly coloured, stunningly bold vintage reverse glass painting is of the Shah Jahans favourite wife Queen Mumtaz, for whom he famously built the Taj Mahal .She was of Persian orgin and the artist here has illustrated that very well with the dramatic red surround! These type of simple reverse glass paintings are an enduringly popular art form in Rajasthan ,mainly produced for the local market. Familiar subjects include portraits of the ruling classes, as here, as well as mythological figures, participants in the Hindu epics, icons and ornamental themes from nature. The vibrant patterning of garments and drapery and areas of block colour recall other Indian pictorial traditions such as miniature painting.
